Winterization or State Inspection… It’s time your trailer gets some TLC

Fall is the perfect time to think about trailer maintenance, even though no one wants to think about trailer maintenance, ever. Summer’s warm days are behind us and so are the constant, long, horse show weekends on the road with your trailer. Now its time to think about fixing up all of those little problems that have been bugging you throughout the season and probably work on making an appointment to winterize your trailer; assuming you’re not hauling all the way to Florida for WEF! If you’re planning to go to WEF, then our advice would be to watch out for sunburns and bad drivers, I mean slow drivers, or wait…both? But in all seriousness, get your trailer serviced before you head out on the haul. Continue reading

Custom Trailer Modification – Does your trailer need a face-lift?

Some people have a soft spot in their hearts for their trusty old trailer and couldn’t bear the thought of trading it in for a younger, sportier model. This is actually not an uncommon scenario, especially with the current state of the economy. We see customers each month who love their trailer dearly, but have ideas for modifications here and there that would really make the trailer more user friendly or specifically suited to their individual needs. So we thought we would discuss a few of the modifications and customizations we’ve completed in our full service trailer shop. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Recently, we converted a four horse head-to-head trailer into a box stall alternative for a previously show circuit active client, now settling into a foaling operation. We installed a ramp for a particularly step-up-phobic equine and even added dividers to a stock trailer previously used for trail horses and in need of the upgrade for the cantankerous children’s ponies it now carried around who couldn’t quite seem to keep their hands to themselves in the open space. Blue Ridge Trailers is off the the 50th Virginia State 4-H Championship Horse and Pony Show

In 2007 we decided that the best way to thank and support ALL of the 4-H members who continue to buy our trailers and come to us for trailer service was to be a major sponsor of this statewide show.

Rob and I also wanted to give something more back to this huge constituency, for whom we are so grateful. The result is that every year we spend 4 days as volunteer “go-fers”  helping Julie and Bob Williamson make this amazing show happen. It is an honor to be involved and getting to see so many Blue Ridge customers all in one place is great fun.

Championship results to follow next week.

All net proceeds from the raffle will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The tickets will be $100 apiece and we’re only selling 350 of them total, which make those excellent odds!

A Few More Horse Trailering Tips

After receiving so much positive feedback from last week’s post we’ve decided to add a few additional points and try to answer some of the questions we received.

When is the right time to upgrade your trailer?

Do you think you need an upgrade or will a bit of TLC work at the trailer dealership fix up your trusty old trailer? Perhaps it is time to take a quick clop in your horse’s shoes. (That’s a farrier joke!) Hop in your trailer and go for a ride. Make sure whoever is driving you is familiar with trailering your horse and will give you the most honest trailering test for comparison. While you’re riding along take note of how the ride feels and sounds. Older suspensions, particularly steel suspensions wear out and the vibration can be extremely disturbing.

4 Tips for Trailering your Horse

1. Smell

New trailer? Have you ever had trouble getting your typically laid back, throw the rope over the neck, horse to load on your brand new trailer? Have you ever pondered why this might be? You spent so much time and energy picking out the perfect trailer and now they won’t get on?! Try putting a muck bucket or wheelbarrow full of your horse’s manure and dirty shavings in the trailer and letting it sit, closed up, overnight. The next morning your horse should hop on the new rig without a problem. Horses are creatures of habit and don’t like the “new car” smell of a brand new trailer, they would rather feel safe and comfortable with their own smell. By closing in the contents of a dirty stall you’re making your trailer smell like home. Give it a try. Continue reading

Blue Ridge Attends World Equestrian Games

Owner/Manager Donna Martin reports that she and her daughter Holly were lucky enough to attend the WEG last week:

“I and my BFF and trainer, Julie Williamson and Julie’s daughter Lindsey set out in the car on Thursday morning at 2am. Arrival at the games was easy and an initial foray into the shopping arcade was made, in anticipation of a future more indept look.

At 1pm we attended the Reining Individual Finals in the new indoor arena. It was such a blast that we ran out and bought more tickets for the reining freestyle for that evening. Friday morning found us shopping (Bit of Britain was so full that the line to purchase items snaked out the door and down into the crowd waiting outside) followed by a viewing of one segment of the Eventing Dressage. Friday night we attended the Dressage Grand Prix Freestyle. The final pair of Totilas and Edward Gal were more than we ever imagined. However, before Totilas’ ride, the Portugese Lusitano Fuego certainly had the crowd on their feet stomping and cheering. When his scores were posted, putting him in second place the rafters rang with boos and hisses. He eventually finished third. Continue reading

Virginia State Trailer Inspections

What You Need to Know About Virginia State Trailer Inspections

The great Commonwealth of Virginia, thankfully, requires that any trailer with a brake, undergo a state certified inspection once every 12 months. This requirement does tend to keep those dangerous rigs, currently being held together by baling twine, off the highway. The state police do a relatively good job, considering ever limited resources, in policing this law. We can rest a little easier because our fellow horsemen are by in large obeying this requirement.

This is the good news. The bad news is that state inspection requirements are relatively basic and do not encompass all of those things that should be inspected, at least once every year, regardless of how often your trailer is being used. Continue reading
